Nebraska Earns Program-Best #4 NCAA Seed After Historic Season
LINCOLN, Neb. — On Selection Sunday, Nebraska basketball heard its name called as a #4 seed in the South Region of the NCAA Tournament, the highest seed in program history and a validation of the most remarkable season Lincoln has ever seen.
The Huskers enter the tournament at 26-4, riding a 20-game win streak that is the longest in the Big Ten since 2011 Ohio State. Their 15 conference wins set a new program record and earned them a share of the Big Ten regular season title — another first.
"This is where this program belongs," head coach Fred Hoiberg said after the bracket was revealed at a watch party inside Pinnacle Bank Arena. "Not just in the tournament — but as a top-four seed with a chance to make a real run. These players have changed the culture here forever."
The transformation has been staggering. Just three seasons ago, Nebraska won 9 games and finished last in the Big Ten. Hoiberg's relentless recruiting, headlined by the additions of Brice Williams and Juwan Gary from the transfer portal, turned the program around almost overnight. Williams, the Big Ten Player of the Year, averages 19.2 points per game. Gary, the conference's Defensive Player of the Year, anchors a unit that ranks 12th nationally in adjusted defensive efficiency.
Nebraska will face Troy in the first round on Thursday in Oklahoma City. It's a matchup the Huskers should handle comfortably on paper, but the program's tournament history — zero wins in its previous four appearances — means nothing will be taken for granted.
"We know the history," Williams said. "We know nobody's ever gotten it done here before. That's exactly why we came to Nebraska — to be the ones who change that."
The fan excitement in Lincoln is palpable. Pinnacle Bank Arena has been sold out for every home game this season, and thousands of fans are expected to make the trip to Oklahoma City. Local businesses are printing "Sweet 16 or Bust" shirts, and the Governor declared Friday "Husker Hoops Day" across the state.
For a fan base that has waited generations for this moment, Selection Sunday felt less like a beginning and more like an arrival.
